Lesson Overview This is a 2 day lesson which is going to introduce the organelles of the cell through the use of a video. Then utilize a divide and conquer approach to learning the structure, function, and importance of the various organelles to the cell. Seven groups will be randomly assigned and each group will be given a pair of organelles to research. They will utilize a variety of print and on-line resources in order to create a presentation describing their assigned organelles.
Objectives: Students will be able to…
Name the different organelles of the cell.
Investigate specific organelles utilizing a variety of resources.
Collect data regarding specific organelles, citing various sources.
Describe the function, structure, and importance of an organelle.
Construct a concise, informational, and creative presentation on a specific organelle.
Safety Issues When allowing students to access the internet, supervision is an important aspect to ensure the students only navigate educationally appropriate sites.
Instruction DAY 1 Opening I will begin this lesson I will have the students take out their homework and giving them 5 min to respond to the question of the day. Having learned that Eukaryotic cells contain membrane bound organelles, what types of functions do you think the different organelles will have? While they do this I will take attendance. I will then collect the responses and ask for some of their examples, which I will write on the board and ask why they feel that is a function an organelle would carry out. I will then show them a brief video clip that introduces the organelles, their name, location, and functions within the cell. I will then break the class up in to 7 groups. We will then head down to the computer lab where they will be assigned their groups organelles. I will also hand out the project rubric and go over it and show a quick sample presentation to give them an idea of something they can do. They will then have the remainder of the period to brainstorm their project/presentation and who will be responsible for doing what. The next day they will have the entire period to do research and get things in order. These lessons will be done on a Thursday and Friday which will allow them the weekend to complete their projects and to present on Monday and Tuesday.
Learning Activities The video will serve as an introduction to the organelles. The research will allow each group to become experts on their specific organelles and then teach what they have learned about them to the rest of the class.
Closing At the end of the period I will reiterate the project and ask if anything needs to be clarified. I will also have them hand in a paper with the names of the people in the group, their idea for their project, and the responsibilities of each group member. If they have not completed this then that will be the groups homework.
Assessment The responses to the question of the day along with the discussion of it will allow me to assess their prior knowledge of the organelles. It will also allow me to see if the students understand that a cell itself is living, therefore it has all the characteristics of life that we have went over. These characteristics need to be performed by the cell and that these functions that are needed to sustain life are carried out by the organelle. Homework Will be to continue work on their project and to fill out a sheet of paper that contains that names of the group members, their organelle, the ideas for their project, and the responsibilities of the individual group members.
Instruction DAY 2 Opening At the beginning of class I will quickly take attendance so that we can get to the computer lab in order for the students to have as much time as possible to work on their projects. I will collect any lists from groups who needed to turn them in and ask if anyone has any questions and concerns regarding what they need to do. After addressing any questions or concerns I will allow them to continue their research. I will continually walk around going to each group to monitor their progress, ask questions, and address questions.
Learning Activities The students, through their research and collaboration will continue learning the function, location and importance of their organelle. Closing I will remind the class that their projects are due on Monday and groups will begin presenting them. The groups will not know who will go first in order to provide a little incentive for the groups to all be done on Monday. All research, posters, presentations, materials, etc must be in by Monday. Assessment Assessments will be made as I walk around to each group. I will be looking to see what they have done so far, where they are planning on going, and if they have any questions. I will also ask them various questions regarding their organelle and based on their responses I will be able to get an idea of how far along they are. Homework Their homework will be just to finish up their project/presentation and be prepared to present on Monday. Additional Notes
